Although teens are unique and respond differently to situations such as a separation or divorce, it has been shown that divorce issues are a common factor in troubled teens. Along with teens being unique, every divorce is different and unique. If you are the parent concerned of divorce issues in your teen it is important to inform your teen why you and your spouse have chosen divorce without degrading or blaming the other parent.  Troubled teens experiencing divorce issues will sometimes try to make sense of the situation and sometimes blame themselves. An example of teens blaming themselves for divorce issues is “Maybe if I would have done the chores they would never fight, and wouldn’t have gotten a divorce.” Parents that choose divorce also must keep in mind that when troubled teens suffer from divorce issues every bit of normalcy is gone leaving them with unanswered questions. Teens may become hostile or angry towards siblings, one or both parents.  These negative emotions that troubled teens begin to feel from divorce issues can lead to teens experimenting with drugs or substances. Teens often use substances to self medicate and suppress or hide their emotions. When this becomes a factor in troubled teens it is important that parents seek help immediately from substance abuse treatment centers.   Although not all teens will become troubled from divorce issues it is a common factor in troubled teens today. Parents going through a divorce should have an open eye with their teens and their behaviors.
