The runaway from yesterday, for the most part, ran from an abusive or violent surroundings. There was no governmental protection for the child, only what an abused parent or family member could try and do. But now that the government has created laws to help these children, the dynamics of a runaway has drastically changed. Society has stepped over certain boundaries that previously helped the family stay together. They have created a "monster" and they have no means to contain that monster. Today’s runaway is a teen that has been given "freedoms" that they have no cognitive reasoning to control. They have learned that the "squeaky wheel" gets what they want and that is the driving force that makes the teen run, running away from reality, running away from God and the security of a loving family. At Zion Educational Systems, we have developed many tools to help the teen cope with reality and become emotionally mature as they enter adulthood. We help them understand the reasons for their acting out and running away. We give them the hope of a future as mature, productive adults. Many of the teens that enter ZES leave with a knowledge of who they are, how to make good and positive choices, and what they can contribute to today’s world without be a part "of" it. They come to the full understanding that running away is NOT an option in leading a life of quality and success.
